I remember noticing first she needed help standing to eat. Then I remember adjusting bowls, supporting her body, and telling myself we’d “take it day by day.” But by the Summer, Lily was officially paralyzed and there was no going back. You don’t get the luxury of sitting in fear for very long — your dog still needs you. So… we adapted

Lily can still express her bladder on her own, but I help her every few hours to make sure she’s fully emptying. I’ve learned her cues — she’ll huff and puff at me until I pay attention, and sure enough, once I check… bam! it all comes out. That consistency has made a noticeable difference in her comfort. Along with daily hygiene that is non-negotiable. We use manuka honey wipes followed by a topical antibacterial spray to help reduce bacteria. It’s not glamorous work, but these small routines play a huge role in preventing infections — especially for paralyzed dogs, who are more prone to moisture build-up.

We rotate acupuncture and chiropractic therapy monthly, alternating every 2 weeks. It’s become part of our rhythm — not something we “try when things get bad,” but something we use proactively to keep her body supported.

She also gets CBD & Mushrooms daily including an anti-inflammatory blend in the morning, seizure-support at night, and a calming blend as needed if she’s anxious or stressed. On top of that, Lily receives milk thistle, bladder, and kidney support — all chosen intentionally and adjusted as her needs change. None of this is about chasing perfection… it’s about maintaining her quality of life.

Over the last two years, I have noticed a frustrating pattern that Lily would always get UTIs in May and again in the Fall from September–November. So this Winter, I made two big changes!

First, I introduced phytoembryonic (a gemmotherapy approach) from Canine Herbalist Rita Hogan. Second, on days when I know I might not be able to express her bladder on time, I add Colloidal Silver to her water/food. With May approaching, my fingers are crossed 🤞 with cautious optimism that this new routine has finally broken that cycle.

Nutrition Has Been a Game Changer as Pork and Rabbit have become the cornerstones of Lily’s diet. By following a protein rotation and implementing a TCVM Water based diet on weekends, I’ve seen noticeable improvements in her bloodwork. When I was feeding beef and turkey more regularly, her BUN levels were much more elevated while this current rotation has supported her kidneys far more effectively.

For fun, she also gets:

• Small Batch Pork treats with Chamomile which has recently become part of Lily’s routine because it supports more than just her mood! It truly helps soothe the nervous system, ease muscle tension, and digestion — all things that matter when a dog’s body is under constant stress from limited mobility.

• Heart & Kidney treats with Beef have been a part of Lily’s routine for awhile now as I follow a “like feeds like” approach! These organ meats help support the heart and kidneys — which is especially important since Lily has both a heart murmur and kidney disease. I rotate beef with pork that so she gets targeted support without overwhelming her system.

• Bone Broth has also become a regular part of Lily’s routine nourishing her body, supporting her joints, and providing gentle, easy-to-digest nutrients — all essential when managing chronic conditions and mobility challenges. Although, I’m still on the lookout for more pork and rabbit options to keep her rotation varied rather than popular Beef & Chicken.

Looking Back — and Looking Forward 🐾💗

When I first adopted Lily, she was actually diagnosed with Grade 2 Luxating Patella, NOT Pug Myelopathy. Thankfully, it never caused her much trouble — there were only a few times I had to gently adjust her joint back into place, and her vets never stressed surgery as necessary. These last 12 years with Lily have definitely taught me to be more observant, proactive, and far less dismissive of “minor” issues.

If there’s one supplement I wish I had introduced earlier for Lily, it’s Myos Green Lipped Mussel. I didn’t start using it until about 4 months AFTER her suspected IVDD diagnosis — and while it’s been supportive, I can’t help but think about how different things might have looked if I had implemented it proactively instead of reactively.

As Darla was recently diagnosed also with Grade 2 Luxating Patella — the same diagnosis Lily had when I first adopted her — Myos was the first supplement I added to her routine. Caring for a paralyzed dog — managing bladder expression, hygiene, supplements, therapies, and nutrition — takes a toll. Some days, it’s exhausting, mentally and physically. And that’s okay. Part of quality care is also being gentle with yourself, recognizing your limits, and giving yourself grace. These lessons have shaped everything I do now. From watching Lily thrive despite her challenges, to caring proactively for Darla, I’ve learned that mindful, intentional support — for our dogs and for ourselves — makes all the difference.

I’ve spent years caring for pets, researching their diets, and advocating for their health. But even I was shocked when I first watched Pet Fooled back in 2016.

Pet Fooled inspired me to never feed kibble to my own dogs ever again. The only exceptions are for my fosters and boarding clients—but for my own pets, I just can’t. There’s a saying I’ve always found fascinating: “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.”

For a long time, I wanted nothing to do with Rover. Like many pet care professionals, I was frustrated by how the platform undervalues the real trust, communication, and accountability that goes into caring for someone’s pets. I originally deleted my Rover profile back in 2015 because, at the time, I felt the platform’s priorities didn’t fully align with my own values around pet safety and individualized care. From my perspective, Rover seemed more focused on growth and convenience than on the deeper commitment to safety and trust that I believe every pet and owner deserves.

But nearly ten years later, I started to see things differently. I realized something important: the pet parents using Rover are not the enemy. They’re loving pet owners just trying to find someone they can trust. The real challenge isn’t the platform—it’s how people use it, and whether they know what to look for.

So instead of staying on the outside, I decided to meet the community where it already is. I am now accepting boarding requests on Rover’s platform—not because I need the exposure, but because I want to raise the standard from within the system.

By being on the platform, I can help encourage pet owners to:

• Do genuine background checks beyond the default Rover vetting.

• Ask thoughtful questions about care experience, safety, and environment.

• Recognize what trustworthy, professional care looks like.

I see this as a quiet act of influence—if people are going to use Rover anyway, I’d rather help them have a better, safer experience there. Sometimes, keeping your “enemies” closer isn’t about compromise; it’s about opportunity.

Here are my top 3 tips to keep your pet happy:

1. Hydration is key 💧
   Always bring a collapsible bowl on early morning or late evening walks to keep your dog refreshed. Skip the ice cubes in their water though as studies show that sudden cold water can cause discomfort. Instead, offering room-temperature water frequently including a little water to their food is the safest way to keep them well-hydrated throughout the day. But don’t worry hydration doesn’t have to be boring — your pup can still beat the heat with supervised frozen enrichment treats! These keep your dog happily hydrated and mentally engaged without the shock of icy water.

2. Paw protection 🐾
   Walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset to avoid overheating and protect their paws from the scorching pavement. Asphalt can get dangerously hot in the summer and cause burns or blisters on tender paw pads. Whenever possible, stick to grassy areas and consider lightweight cooling booties for extra protection. After walks, check paws for any redness or irritation and soothe them with dog-safe balm. These simple steps keep your pup comfortable and safe during hot-weather strolls.

3. Cool zones ❄️
   To help your dog stay comfortable, consider investing in mats that absorb and dissipate your dog’s body heat, providing a cool surface to lie on without needing water or electricity. They’re perfect for use at home, in the car, or even outdoors during breaks. You can also try a simple, effective DIY: freeze a wet bandana or small towel and gently wrap it around your dog’s neck. Just soak the bandana, wring out excess water, freeze it for a couple of hours, and then use it to give your pup quick, refreshing relief from the heat. Both cooling mats and frozen bandanas offer easy, safe ways to keep your dog cool and comfortable during those hot Vegas days.

  Dogs thrive on predictability, so keeping feeding, walking, and playtimes on schedule helps ease their anxiety. If they’ll be alone for long stretches, consider hiring a trusted afternoon caregiver for bathroom breaks, exercise, and companionship to keep them happy and engaged.

As 2025 comes to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a year filled with challenges, heartbreak, and joy. Every high and low has shaped my journey as and deepened the bonds I share with the pets and people I serve.

I still carry Frances with me, my family’s dog who was misdiagnosed and suffered for 6 months before passing on the operating table. That heartbreak taught me the importance of proactive care and advocating fiercely for the pets we love. When I adopted Lily, I committed to being her health and wellness advocate—speaking up, applying what I’ve learned, and protecting her well-being every step of the way, a commitment I continue today as I help manage her chronic UTIs, kidney disease, and oral health.

💔 Heartbreak that shaped me ✨

On June 24th, 2025 we said goodbye to my beloved Mr. Dixon Pugstable. Losing him has been one of the most painful experiences in my life.

Grief comes in waves—sometimes soft and quiet, sometimes sharp and unexpected—showing up in moments I never anticipated and reminding me just how deeply we were connected.

He was ⅓ of the reason why I began this journey as a Canine Concierge. I wanted to fight for dogs like him. To help pet parents ask the right questions. To support professionals in a way that ensures no pet falls through the cracks. More than Luna & Lily, he lit that fire in me. I adopted Dixon because of his special needs, not in spite of them—and he quickly became my greatest teacher. When traditional vets couldn’t provide answers, I became a certified animal caregiver and consulted with national experts to fight for his health. From dermatitis to arthritis to dementia, he defied the odds and lived a full 18 years. Along the way, he taught me everything I know about the gut microbiome and continues to inspire the work I’m so passionate about today.

Now in his absence, I feel him with me. He’s been sending me dragons 🐉 —at home, on TV and in shadows — gentle signs that he’s still near and at peace. If you’ve ever lost a beloved pet, you know how powerful those messages can be. They’re quiet but undeniable. A reminder that love never really leaves. And then—one of the quiet highs of this year is that we didn’t replace Dixon… but we did open our hearts again after fostering for 2 months, we adopted Darla!

She came to us after being surrendered to The Animal Foundation with a damaged eye, later transferred to a local pug rescue where she received the surgery she so desperately needed. When she arrived, she was fragile and clearly traumatized—but we watched her, day by day, begin to feel safe, to trust, and to learn how to love again. As she healed, she brought laughter, curiosity, and a new rhythm into our home. Watching her transformation made it clear that she wasn’t just passing through. That’s when we made the decision to officially make her a Pugstable —honoring her journey, her resilience, and everything Dixon was and Luna still is to me.

Here’s to a year of growth, learning, and unconditional love—and to the moments that quietly shape who we become. I’m endlessly grateful for the pets, people, and experiences that made this year so meaningful. What moments shaped your year? 💌🐾
